Start Menu> All Programs error.
I'm running Windows XP Media Centre Version 2002, SP2. I'm unable to acces "All Programs" under the Start Menu from my Administartion account. Each time attempt to acces them, I get the follwoing Windows Explorer error: AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156 ModName: shell32.dll ModVer: 6.0.2900.3402 Offset: 00054ec1 Followed by a DrWatson's error, after which I'm unable to interface with windows (excpet Task Manager) unless I log off my profile, and log in again, or end a non-responsive task in the task manager. Also if I drag the Taks Manger window, it constantly replicates the window, smearing it across the dispay. I've also experienced other odd things whereby I couldn't enable my network card interface for internet access unless I went into the device manager. This problem was resolved after rebooting my PC. Also, web page downloads generally seem slower and are not always successful the first time. My other "User" account doesn't suffer with this problem. I created a new Admin account as a test, and it was OK too. I have done a full system scan with trend Micro and latest updates, without any issues. I also performed a Windows update after the error first occurred, though it hasn't fixed the problem. I'm suspecting the account or registry entries for this account have become corrupted? Any suggestions? Thanks. 1 person needs an answerI do too

I think your assessment that the user account is corrupted is correct. Since the same issue doesn't occur with a new user account, create one for yourself and copy your data from the old one to the new one. Then, after you are sure you have everything, delete the corrupted user account from Control Panel.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Thanks for responding to my post. Trend picked up an unauthorised change, filename \x86\DifXInstall32.exe in my Application Data directory under Documents & Settings. I did a google search and found an interesting article at the following link: http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/510426 I've since done a system restore to a previous date which fixed the Start Menu issue. With reference to the abovementioned article, I've uninstalled iTunes & Quicktime Viewer & reinstalled an old version. However web page downloading still seems slow and I get pop-up blocker notifying me that some web pages need to run an add-on, whereas it never did previously for those web pages. Do you know if that is a symptom of a system restore?

I don't think these are symptoms of a System Restore. I think it would be wise for you to do some better scanning. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_MalwareMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
